With the cost of living going up all the time, and wages staying scarily stagnant in some cases, we can be forgiven for finding it a struggle to do the things we want to do with the money we have.
Thanks to Jeremy Hunt, the NHS is no different, and with stories of NHS nurses needing to use food banks, you can see what a state the country is in.
Who’s to Blame?
Still, if we blame the economy or Jeremy Hunt for own finances, we’re just playing the role of “victim”. If we allow circumstances to keep us down, we’ll always be in trouble – never freeing ourselves from the paycheck to paycheck cycle, and always being in debt.
So repeat after me – “I am in control of my own life, and I WILL find a way NO MATTER what”.
We must take responsibility for our own actions. If we blame people like Jeremy Hunt or the economy (or anything else for that matter), we are effectively dis-empowering ourselves with excuses.
Well no more! We are going to take ACTION to reach our goals and take back control of the money in our own lives. It doesn’t have to be a struggle.

So this post is the first of a series of ways to make extra cash in addition to your day job. The key is to know how much extra you want, and fit something around your lifestyle. It doesn’t matter who you are. There will be something you can do; if there’s a will, there’s a way.
Watch this space!

If you are lucky enough to own your own home and you want to make more money, instead of just sitting on your property hoping that it will appreciate in value over the years, put it to work right now, and start boosting your bank balance immediately. There are literally dozens of ways that you can make money from your home – its your very own gold mine.
Rent a Room
If you have the space and you don’t mind sharing it, you can make as much as £7500 tax-free annually by letting out a room or two in your house. This obviously isn’t for everyone, but if you could use some extra money to pay off the mortgage early or for that investment you’re interested in, it is definitely worth considering. Spareroom.co.uk is a good place to start looking for roomies.
Run a B&B
Another one for those of you who have the space in your home and who are cool with having ‘strangers’ to your property is to set up as a B&B. For this to be viable, you’re probably going to need at least three fair-sized spare rooms available, and you’ll probably have to do some remodelling, but it could be a fantastic business opportunity. Make sure you take into consideration the location of your property, transport and tourist links, and what you will realistically be able to offer your guests.
Host Airbnb Guests
Similar to running a B&B (but on a smaller scale), you can rent out a whole house or a single room on Airbnb. If you’re in a good location with attractive accommodation, people will come, and they will pay you well. This is perhaps an easier way of making money from your property by renting out space, because you can pick and choose when you do and don’t want to have guests, and you can even use easy Airbnb management services to take care of the whole thing, from creating a profile to cleaning your place before and after guests on your behalf. They do charge fees though, and some won’t cover your area, so find out first before you decide if they’re worth putting in place. You might be pleasantly surprised by just how easy it is.
Rent Out Your Garage
If you have a garage on your property and you don’t need to use it, you could rent it out as affordable storage space for people’s excess possessions or as a place where they can keep their vehicles and earn a few hundred to a few thousand pounds each year. Just bear in mind that it could affect your insurance, which you might have to update to protect you and your customers. Moneymagpie.com has an excellent resource on this for you.
Become a Location
There are numerous film production companies and photographers who are always on the lookout for locations. It’s worth registering with them because you can earn several hundreds of pounds to several thousands of pounds depending on the job, how long it lasts and how inconvenienced you’ll be.
Remember the Lord of the Rings Movies? The Hobbiton movie set was built on the Alexander Farm in Waikato, New Zealand. The set-directors thought the place would be perfect for the movie, so approached the farmer (who incidentally, was watching rugby at the time, and told them to come back after if was over!), and history was made. Go for a visit if you ever get the chance!
Of course, there’s no guarantee your home will ever be called upon in this way, but you have nothing to lose by registering your interest.
As you can see, there are numerous ways to make money from your property (and this post is just scratching the surface), that you’d be unwise to not even consider its possibilities.
So I hope you enjoyed that post. There will be lots more ideas coming, so keep a look out for related posts on making money. I have more ideas in my free 7-day Money Kickstarter Course on Day 5.
